Job Description

The Xavier University Police Department is seeking applicants for a police officer position. This position involves protecting life and property, preventing/deterring crime, enforcing laws (i.e., state statutes, city ordinances), rules, and regulations per Xavier University policy. The successful candidate will utilize community oriented policing strategies to reduce crime and educate the University population in crime prevention, work with members of the surrounding communities and local law enforcement to identify and rectify issues which may reduce quality of life standards for the community at large, and assist members of the University as required beyond the scope of conventional law enforcement duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Patrols buildings and grounds on foot, golf cart, bicycle, and in patrol vehicles. Preserves the peace, protection of life and property; prevents crime, enforces laws (i.e., state statues, city ordinances), rules and regulations per Xavier University Policy and Code of Student Conduct. Apprehends violators, files affidavits, serves warrants, issue citations, and detains violators as required for both the Xavier community as well as other police agencies.
  • Investigates complaints, criminal offenses, and motor vehicle accidents. Renders written reports (i.e. daily activity log, offense/accident/injury, and condition reports, etc.). Escorts money and receipts as needed by other departments of the university. Assists stranded motorists (jump starts, lock-outs, etc.), provides room accesses, conducts safety escorts and coordinates services between other University departments, contractors, and Xavier community members as needed.
  • Works with students, faculty and staff, members of the surrounding communities, and other law enforcement agencies to provide quality crime prevention and community oriented policing programs designed to educate the community in all areas of personal and campus safety. Supports those initiatives through daily application of community oriented policing activities (walking through buildings, public relations, education programming, etc.).
  • Performs security at special events. Assists with traffic control and parking operations. Assists with fire-fighting and safety inspections. Aids and protects officials and visitors.
  • Performs other specialized duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or Shift Lieutenants based on training, experience, and interest.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School or GED
  • Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certified.
  • Pass physical fitness test
  • Pass drug screen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years of police experience relevant to the position.

Qualified candidates, if selected for the offer, will be required to pass a drug screening, a department physical assessment test, as well as other University, required tests.
