About the Role

Join Berkeley Law's Career Development Office (CDO) as the Associate Director of Public Interest Programs , overseeing career services for over 900 J.D. students and alumni with a focus on public interest legal careers. The role requires extensive knowledge of the public interest legal market, strong networking skills, and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze the current state of the public interest legal services and job markets, and forecast emerging trends.
  • Identify existing and emerging career and job options, assessing their short- and long-term feasibility.
  • Assess the evolving career development needs of alumni attorneys and student populations.
  • Design, develop, and implement workshops, programs, services, and resources (including online guides and webcasts) to meet current career development needs.
  • Recommend, manage, and refine existing services and develop entirely new offerings.
  • Provide one-on-one, client-driven career consulting to students seeking public interest careers or internships.
  • Assist students with self-assessments and guide them in leveraging public interest networks.
  • Amplify best practices in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within all program design and delivery.
  • Build and sustain the law schools professional network of potential employers and legal career professionals.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with public interest organizations to support fundraising and enhance campus partnerships.
  • Develop and oversee broad, complex career-focused programs and events.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to career services staff and support staff (e.g., room reservations, catering, announcements).
  • Leverage innovative media and technology to deliver content across online, print, and social platforms.
  • Collaborate with law school departments and student organizations to create mutually beneficial programs.
  • Participate in panel discussions, research, and writing about public interest careers through national organizations and media.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of career decision-making and job search techniques.
  • Knowledge of career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs, as well as employment trends.
  • Detailed knowledge of the public interest legal job market and general knowledge of the private sector legal market.
  • Extensive professional network of practicing attorneys and potential employers.
  • Excellent problem-identification, presentation, communication, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Creative, entrepreneurial, forwardlooking approach to program development.
  • Strong client service skills, including needs assessment and quality service evaluation.
  • Deep understanding of human behavior, motivation, and learning theory.
  • Commitment to creating an equitable environment for students, faculty, and staff.
  • High sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to DEIB and ability to integrate DEIB concepts into practice.
  • Excellent computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, presentation software) and adaptability to new software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of career development theories.
  • Experience with needs assessment, workshop design, and program implementation.
  • Ability to learn and apply UC programs.

Education/Training

  • Advanced degree (Juris Doctor, LL.M., or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years of public interest legal practice experience.

Salary & Benefits

Monthly salary range: $90,000.00 $104,640.00. The position is fulltime (40 hours per week) and eligible for all UC benefits.

  • Full-time, 100% career position.
  • Position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • Hybrid role with up to 20% remote capability.
